Nottingham sounds like exactly what I need.

Too bad I’ll never get there.

“I know you heard them!” Anna hisses in my ear, and I jump when I realize she’s standing over my bed. “Why can’t you just admit it?”

I cram the brochure under my pillow and pull Anna into the quiet hallway. Most of the castle isn’t up yet. A member of the ELF Cleaning crew hired to dust during the construction is cleaning windows in the hallway.

“I didn’t hear anything!” I whisper-shout back to her. “I’m not evil!”

“And neither are they!” Anna counters. Her face crumbles. “I think they just wanted our help. And you let the royal guard shoot them out of the sky!”

“I had nothing to do with the royal guard shooting them! But I wasn’t helping gargoyles either, just like you shouldn’t, if you’re trying to be as good as you claim to be.” I look around to make sure the ELF crew can’t hear us. “You know gargoyles worked for Alva just like you did! You can’t trust them!”

“But these were asking for help,” Anna says, sounding agitated. “I heard it. I know I did. I’ve been around a lot of gargoyles, obviously, and I’ve never heard them speak to me before. Maybe they were tricked into helping villains just like I was.”

I snort. “You don’t look like someone who could be tricked.”

Anna rolls her eyes. “Fine. Brainwashed. My point is, they could be innocent, but you won’t take the time to help me find out.”

“No, I won’t!” I hiss. “Keep me out of your plans. I couldn’t hear the gargoyles. If you did, then maybe you’re the one who needs help.” She flinches and for a moment I feel bad. “Look, all I care about is finding Olivina and getting out of this school once and for all. Now if you excuse me, I have to get ready for class.”

“Devin!” Anna hurries after me, but I’m done listening.

Instead I hear a peck, peck, peck at the window. I stop short and Anna practically slams into my back. It’s Dimitri.

Oh, Devin! Thank goodness I found you. We just found a family of raccoons that were living in a hollowed-out log. They were injured in the battle and need help but couldn’t make it this far—not with all the construction. You need to come right away.

My heart lurches. I can’t, I chirp. We’re forbidden to leave the castle, but I’ll put together a first aid kit in my room for you to bring them. Maybe if I give instructions, you’ll know what to do. I’ll be right back! I start back for our bedroom.

“Are you really going to send this dove to help them when you’re the one they need?” Anna snaps.

I spin around. “You understood that?”

Anna scratches her head, looking confused herself. “I think so…” She points to the dove. “He said a family of hurt raccoons are living in a hollowed-out log, and then you said, ‘I can’t leave school grounds.’ Which is ridiculous when you’re needed, but am I right?”

She’s a creature caretaker too? Dimitri chirps.
